Terumo and Asahi Intecc to Launch Guidewire Tie-up

Terumo Corporation
Asahi Intecc Co., Ltd.

Terumo Corporation (President: Yutaro Shintaku, “Terumo”) and Asahi Intecc Co., Ltd. (President: Masahiko Miyata, “Asahi Intecc”) hereby announce that they have agreed to launch a cooperative medical guidewire development.

1. Details of the tie-up

  1. Terumo and Asahi Intecc will start joint development of guidewires to be used for catheterization diagnosing via the wrist artery (TRI). Jointly developed products will be manufactured by Asahi Intecc on an OEM basis.
TRI (Trans-Radial coronary Intervention) is a technique for diagnosing and treating arteries using a catheter inserted into the wrist artery.
Compared with the trans-femoral approach from the groin, TRI uses a smaller incision and results in less bleeding. Patients can get back on their feet soon after the procedure and may not be required to remain in hospital overnight. In recent years, TRI has become more widespread around the globe, partly because of the healthcare cost-cutting benefits it provides.
  2. Mini guidewires to be included in diagnostic catheter kits will be manufactured by Asahi Intecc on an OEM basis and sold by Terumo.

Both Terumo and Asahi Intecc have previous involvement in the field of endovascular interventions. This tie-up will enable the two companies to combine their individual strengths in order to contribute to the spread of minimally invasive therapies and the improvement of healthcare quality, while at the same time further reinforcing their business interests.
