Terumo to Acquire Cardiopulmonary Products Business in Japan
from Edwards Lifesciences Ltd.

We would like to announce that Terumo Corporation (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President: Akira Takahashi), which aims to reinforce and expand its cardiopulmonary business, has reached an agreement with Edwards Lifesciences Ltd. to acquire the company's perfusion products business in Japan.

With this acquisition, Terumo's global share in this business area will grow from 28% to 31%, bringing the company to the top global share.

  2. Purpose of the Acquisition
    Ever since we launched our hollow-fiber oxygenator in 1982, we have been engaged globally in the business of cardiopulmonary systems that are used in heart surgery. We acquired cardiopulmonary businesses from 3M (USA) and Lifestream (USA) in 1999 and 2002, respectively, and have steadily developed our activities in this field. By acquiring Edwards Lifesciences' sales operations, we will be able to reinforce our sales structure in Japan, which will in turn enable us to further advance our market position as the leader in the industry.
    Another aim is to strengthen the foundations of our sales operations in preparation for our planned expansion into the area of heart surgery.
