Terumo to donate 40 million yen worth of medical equipment-enough for
100 thousand people-for the prevention of infectious diseases.
To aid survivors in areas affected by the massive earthquake
off the coast
of Sumatra
This is an announcement that Terumo Corporation (Head office:
Tokyo,Japan / President: Akira Takahashi) will donate medical equipment
for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, including syringes
and transfusion kits, to cover the needs of 100 thousand people living
in areas affected by the massive earthquake that occurred last year off
the coast of Sumatra.
- Background of the donation
It has been reported that incidents of infectious diseases
including cholera and typhoid fever are on the rise in densely populated
aid camps due to deteriorating hygiene. Measures for preventing and
treating infectious diseases, such as vaccination and transfusions,
are therefore essential. In response to requests from local governments,
our local subsidiaries have already been providing emergency aid in
the form of medical equipment such as syringes and solution administration
sets. Meanwhile, as the need for such equipment is expected to grow
beyond the current levels, we have decided to donate these items to
all affected areas as an initiative of our corporate head office.
- Overview of donated items
Syringes, injection needles, solution administration
sets , injection needles for transfusions, medical gloves and other
products. (We will be donating a total of 100 thousand sets or 40
million yen's worth.)
- Timing and method
We are currently discussing how these products can be
transferred with local organizations in hard-hit countries including
Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India. The transfer will be executed
sequentially once a plan has been formalized.
