TERUMO PTCA Catheter RX-2 (pet name "Ryujin
Plus"),
a Device for Use in the Treatment of Angina and Myocardial Infarction
TERUMO CORPORATION (headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) launched
the Terumo PTCA catheter RX-2 (pet name "Ryujin Plus") on January
11, 2005. This new catheter is used in percutaneous transluminal coronary
angioplasty (PTCA), a therapy for people with angina and myocardial infarction,
and is sold to medical institutions throughout the country at a suggested
retail price (an insurance redemption price) of 182,000 yen per unit.
The sales target for the first year after the launch is set at 18,000
units.
PTCA is a therapy utilizing a balloon fitted to the tip of a tube 1 mm
in diameter, which is called a PTCA catheter. This balloon is inflated
in the lesion to dilate a blood vessel that has been narrowed or clogged
due to coronary artery diseases, such as angina or myocardial infarction.
In Japan, PTCA is now performed in 150,000 cases a year at more than 1,000
medical facilities.
This new Ryujin Plus is capable of reaching a target lesion quickly and
safely even in the cases where catheter operation is difficult because
blood vessels are narrow, winding, and twisting or because the lesion
is hard. The tip of the new catheter remains flexible, but has a non-breakable
shape so as to improve the penetrability when the tip passes through the
lesion.

Product name: TERUMO PTCA Catheter RX-2
Medical Device Approval No. 21500BZZ00732
Product Features
- The catheter tip with increased penetrating performance
The catheter tip has a small diameter and a non-breakable shape,
thus enabling the tip to reach the target lesion quickly and safely
and to pass through the lesion more easily.
- The balloon that can be inflated more than once
The balloon is in a carefully folded state. After the balloon has
been inflated and then deflated, it can be inflated again. Therefore,
the balloon can be used to dilate plural lesions in a series of catheter
operations for the same patient.
- Many variations in size
The balloon length ranges from 10 mm to 40 mm, with various lengths
in-between. The doctors are free to choose the most suitable balloons
for each case.
