Adopting universal design Terumo Digital Thermometer C250
-dubbed the "Melody thermometer"-
Tokyo based Terumo Corporation has released Japan's first digital thermometer adopting universal design *1 , the "Terumo Digital Thermometer C250" dubbed the "Melody Thermometer", on March 1st. The new product will be available at pharmacies and electrical goods stores throughout Japan.Recommended retail price is 3,300 yen. Sales of 550,000 units are estimated for the first year.
*1 The universal design is intended to enable every one including the elderly and the handicapped to use the product easily.
The "Melody thermometer " is easy to use by everyone, including the elderly and the hearing-impaired, thanks to such features as a large liquid crystal display, about 3.7 times larger than that of the conventional type and a tune to signal the end of thermometry.
Our conventional digital thermometers give signals with a "pipipipi...." sound. However, since range or volume of hearing varies by ages, from person to person, it is difficult for some people including the elderly to hear or find the beep.
The new product, the "Melody thermometer", signals the end of thermometry with a louder electronic tune that has a wider range of sound. Unlike beeps, tunes consist of various pitches, which make it easier for everyone to hear. The "Melody thermometer "uses "Mary had a little lamb," a popular tune for all ages.
The liquid crystal display, which is about 3.7 times larger than that of our conventional item, makes it easy to read the measurement results.
Product Features
- Digital thermometer with universal design
A loud tune signals the end of thermometry
A tune signals when the thermometry has ended. It enables the elderly and the people who are hard of hearing. " Mary had a little lamb," a tune everyone knows, offers enjoyable thermometry.
Easy-to-read large display
The liquid crystal display is about 3.7 times larger than that of our conventional product (the Terumo Digital Thermometer C202), to be read the measurement results at a glance.
- Speedy measurement in about 90 seconds on average
Highly sophisticated microcomputers enable the "Melody thermometer" to quickly predict body thermometer with unfailing accuracy.
- Changeable battery
The battery service life is about one year when using the unit one time a day. Also the battery can be replaced.
Measurement principle for prediction type thermometer
Since axilla is surface of the body, more than 10 minutes are required until it warms enough to reflect the inner body temperature when it is held close. The temperature taken for more than10 minutes is "equilibrium temperature, the precise temperature. Therefore, the mercury thermometers and the actual type digital thermometers require more than 10 minutes to get the "equilibrium temperature".
But the "Melody thermometer", a sophisticated built-in microcomputer minutely analyzes and calculates the rising curve of the temperature, and predicts the equilibrium temperature in about 90 seconds on average. If the thermometer is kept after the first tune signal, it will automatically measurement mode. Predictive type digital thermometers are widely used in hospitals and other medical facilities.
