What is basal body temperature?

The basal body temperature means one's resting body temperature , which should be available by measuring it in the bed soon after awaking in the morning. The pattern of the basal body temperature pattern of a healthy woman follows a cycle of a low temperatures phase and a high temperatures one determined by the menses cycle. Continuous-recording of the basal body temperature can help women control their pregnancy or contraception, and be aware of their physical condition by themselves.

The following can be recognized by the pattern of basal body temperature: ! Ovulation Condition.

Two-phased pattern of basal body temperature between high and low temperature phases is caused by ovulation and secretion of progestational hormone that works the body temperature raising. If the basal body temperature does not have these two-phased pattern, there is a possibility of menses without ovulation.

  • Ovulation Date
Ovulation occurs several days after the lowest basal body temperature around the end of the low-temperature phase. Some women with menstrual irregularities can't clearly read out their ovulation date from their pattern, however, the high-temperature phase lasting 9 days or more is considered that ovulation has occurred.
  • Pregnancy Basically, a high-temperature phase lasting 16 days shows the possibility of pregnancy. However, progestational hormone may be secreted for about 18 the days even when not pregnant. So, a high-temperature phase lasting 21 days or more is regarded as pregnancy in general.
