May 16, 2000Terumo Expands Hangzhou, China Production Facilities Expansion to increase Japan-bound productionTokyo-based Terumo Corporation has increased production at its factory in Hangzhou, in the Chinese province of Chekiang, almost doubling the size of the capacities to meet increased demand. Terumo's Hangzhou factory was established in December, 1995 as Terumo Medical Products (Hangzhou) Co. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary, and has been producing hospital supplies such as drainage puroducts and infusion sets for the Japanese market, drawing praise from hospitals and medical institutions for the high quality of its products. The range of products manufactured at the factory will be now be expanded to blood transfusion tubings and infusion sets and filters for use in administering high-calorie parenteral nutrition. Terumo established its first factory to produce medical supplies for Europe and the U.S. in the early 1970s. Amidst growing demand for hospital supplies, Terumo has been developing a global production system based on optimum location of production facilities. With the recent expansion of production, the Hangzhou factory will now account for 5% of Terumo's total overseas output. The Hangzhou factory will continue to produce supplies for Japan, but supplies for others markets, as well as for the local Chinese market is also under consideration. Outline of the Hangzhou factory
