May 18, 1998New Terumo HayateTM PTCA Dilatation CatheterTokyo-based Terumo Corporation has announced the new HAYATETM, a PTCA (Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty) dilatation catheter for treating conditions such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. HAYATE is Terumo's first semi-compliant type PTCA balloon catheter. A highly elastic material has been used for the balloon, resulting in a balloon that expands more readily in response to pressure. As a result, the catheters can be used in a broad range of procedures, including Stent treatments. The tip of the catheter is shaped to a low profile design in which the balloon is folded neatly. It also features a hydrophilic coating to enable superior passage through constricted blood vessels. The structure of HAYATE is known as 'rapid exchange-type'. Approximately 80% of PTCA dilatation catheters in Europe are of this variety, as are around half of those used in Japan. 'Rapid exchange-type' catheters are constructed so that the guide wire passes only through the distal portion of the catheter. Usually one or two catheters are used for each PTCA treatment, and ease in catheter exchange assists in ensuring a smooth procedure. Last year Terumo released the TSURUGIa, the first domestically-produced rapid-exchange type catheter, and positive response to this product has resulted in the development of the new HAYATE. Product features
Sales of HAYATE are expected to expand the company's domestic market share of PTCA catheters from 6% to 10%. A sales target of \1.6 billion has been set for the first year. The product will also be available in Asia and Europe. |
